About the lecture
The lecture tells the story of Barbara and is a near future speculative fiction. The story takes place in a conflictual world scarred by overproduction of goods and the powers of bio-technology (gene-editing) being finally available for the public. The lecture will recount snippets from Barbara's life between nine and thirty years old. Barbara is a tale of transformation.
Barbara is an attempt, a thought exercise in order to explore future realities, to speculate and to embrace the beautiful intertwining possibilities between humans, technology, culture and the environment and serves as an input into Garðar‘s workshop in Halle the same week called “<link hochschule/einrichtungen/burg-gestaltet/angebote-fuer-studierende/herbst-und-wintersessions/l/wintersession-2019-make-conflicted-matter/ _blank - "Öffnet externen Link in neuem Fenster">Conflicted Matter</link>“.
In addition the MA Design: Explorations & Translations program at the Iceland University of the Arts will be introduced and its vision explained by using projects from students. MA Design: Explorations & Translations is a critical design program in Iceland that is open to people with various backgrounds, from within the design field but is also open to people from social and natural sciences. The MA aims to give platform for students to develop their own unique way of exploring, mapping and researching the world around us as well as serving as platform for the students to engage with various media, material, video, text, photo, performance, atmospheres, scenography to name a few in order to communicate their unique voice to society.
Garðar Eyjólfsson is the programme director of MA Design: Explorations & Translations program at the Iceland University of the Arts.
