Digital Structural Composites – A Collection of Digital and Physical Structural Samples

Is it possible to create different properties within an object, made form just one physical material but different structures, by using generative, computer-aided design methods? Experiments in three phases address this question. The process is characterised by an experimental exploration of the software Grasshopper as well as digitally generated materiality.
The explored structural composites can appear in different materials and objects. They were prototypically produced using SLA and FDM printing processes and consist of a single physically tangible material, the filament or resin, and the non-physical digital material, the software.
The process is designed to create functional structural assemblies, as is common in nature, by using digital manufacturing methods. In this way, a collection of physical and digital structural samples has been created, the exploration of which awakens application scenarios.
