Pattern IO
Investigating Pattern Formation
In this 2nd year design exercise, we dealt with basic design methods within the interplay of analogue and digital tools. In the process, the students practised visualisation and presentation techniques as well as various paths from idea to design to model. The project was divided into two parts: Surface and Space.
1. Surface – Exploration of 2D Patterns
In the first part, we developed a formal repertoire by designing and creating two-dimensional surface structures. The students deepened their knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and experimented with drawing robots to investigate different qualities resulting from transferring from digital to analogue. They learned the basics of hardware control and the evaluation of variants.
2. Space – Exploration of 3D Patterns
In the second part, we worked out design strategies for creating spatial form contexts. For this we used the programmes Rhino and Grasshopper to develop digital shapes, which were then 3D printed in different scales. In the process, we learned the differences and similarities of additive manufacturing methods in model making.
The project was accompanied by two excursions to Berlin and Dresden. In Berlin, we visited the artist Marcel Schwittlick, who makes large-format drawings with digital and analogue plotters, the designer Babette Wiezorek, who makes ceramic objects with experimental 3D printing, and the exhibition Nothingtoseeness at the Akademie der Künste. In Dresden, we visited the exhibition Deutsches Design 1949-1989 / Zwei Länder, eine Geschichte (German Design 1949-1989 / Two Countries, One Story) in the Lipsiusbau, the design studio The Constitute and the sound and robotics artist Moritz Simon Geist.
