Training in Art Fundamentals in the Art Faculty

Art Fundamentals at the BURG

The BURG offers a unique 'Grundlagenstudium'. Our students are firmly anchored in their specialised class from day one and at the same time integrated into a cross-class foundation course. In the four-semester 'Grundlagenstudium' programme, they have the opportunity to find out which artistic methods and reflection strategies they want to use in their further studies in exchange with students from all departments.
The wide-ranging ‘Grundlagen’ programme gives students the opportunity to choose from and try out a wide variety of media and techniques. Or - to concentrate on one of them in particular. In the numerous artistic workshops, students can acquire in-depth knowledge in dealing with the respective materials and technical possibilities in order to be able to realise future projects.
In addition to artistic production, the presentation and communication of their own work is seen as part of artistic practice. The areas of theory are part of the teaching right from the start, so that students can think through their development plans precisely with a view to historical and current artistic positions.

The 'Grundlagenstudium' programme supports students in consistently pursuing their own questions and, thanks to the fundamentally interdisciplinary structure of the courses, also opens up a range of artistic approaches and techniques for finding solutions.

Teaching areas

With the start of the winter semester 2023/24, the study regulations of the Kunsthochschule Halle in the Department of Art will change. As a result, the study programme for students in the Art Fundamentals at the Burg will also change.

The main changes for students in the Fundamentals are as follows:

  • The distinction between 'Atelierwochen' studio weeks and 'Normalwochen' normal weeks is cancelled.
  • The courses will be published online one month before the start of the semester under ‘Courses offered’, indicating the times of teaching and the SWS (semester hours per week).
  • The courses offered in the Art Fundamentals generally run for one semester. To avoid overlaps in your study calendar, students should pay attention to the course dates and coordinate them with your study calendar.
  • The distinction between Art Fundamentals and accompanying Art Fundamentals will be cancelled. The previous seminars of the accompanying Art Fundamentals are recognised with 3 SWS, the seminars of the former Art Fundamentals with 6 SWS.
  • A total of 45 SWS must be completed during the degree programme in the seminars and courses of the Fundamentals
  • must be demonstrated. Of these, at least 30 SWS must be achieved by the time of the intermediate diploma.
  • All Burg students can take part in the courses offered by a lecturer in the Fundamentals after successfully registering with them.
  • The subject-specific Fundamentals are taught within the subject-specific classes (subject-specific knowledge), the Friday time slot is reserved for this. You will receive information on specialised knowledge in the respective specialised classes.
  • Time slots on Monday and Tuesday are reserved for the science seminars.

Information on the courses offered in the Fundamentals

Information on the seminars, registration formalities and all other information will be available from the beginning of September on the Art Fundamentals website at courses.

Contact with the lecturers of the Art Fundamentals & certificates in the Fundamentals

It is still possible to obtain a certificate in the artistic basics from two related certificates of the accompanying artistic basics (e.g. etching, & screen printing, digital images & portfolio) after consultation with a GL professor.

There is also always the option of contacting a lecturer of the Art Fundamentals directly. Here you would have the opportunity to present a work that you have developed in an area of the Fundamentals in recent semesters, but did not have the opportunity to attend a corresponding seminar in the basics in this particular field. After consultation with the lecturer, it is also possible to obtain a certificate for the artistic basics.

Yours sincerely,
