History of Art
Theoretical reflection accompanies the practical education at the university from students’ first steps right through to the ‘Diplom’ degree or to state examinations. The main subject of teaching in Art Studies is the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. Basic knowledge of prior art history since the middle ages is also taught as an aid to understanding modern and contemporary art. Historical issues that were specific to the period in question are linked with current debates here. The broad spectrum of artistic disciplines in the university – from graphics, book art, sculpture, painting and textiles right through to media art – is found again here as the object of theoretical consideration. Also included is interdisciplinary exchange between art and design. Practically oriented discussion aims to aid the understanding of the historical context of the creation of a given work of art and to create awareness of current societal and artistic contextualisation. Issues that are common to a number of media and those that are specific to various branches and media are also considered, along with the interrelationship between production and reception. Right from the very beginning, art has repeatedly dealt with comparable issues and subjects, but the historical content and the associated horizon of experiences, the media possibilities and collective and individual constellations have led to very specific solutions in each case. As a result of the increased use of images in all academic and societal areas nowadays, our awareness of their general significance needs to be made more acute.
On the one hand, this involves the teaching of specialist knowledge and of complex interrelationships between various areas. On the other, the seminars, colloquia and excursions should give students the ability to analyse aesthetic phenomena independently – not least so that they will acquire a tool for reflecting on their own artistic positions. Cooperation with universities in Germany and abroad, and interdisciplinary projects and exhibitions will round off the academic teaching available.
