Study programme

Jewellery

Part of the "Diplom" degree course Plastic Arts in the Art Faculty

We explore wearable art forms, encompassing jewellery and wearable sculptures. Jewellery and worn sculptural objects are examined as powerful tools for understanding and communication embedded in contemporary life, including identity, culture, society, technology, emotion, and more. Artistic expressions will be conceived in relation to individual experiences and perspectives such as that of the self, the wearer, the artist, and/or the observer. The program aims to help students to define their artistic identity and develop a strong body of work.

The Jewellery degree programme places emphasis on making and handling of materials, as well as accumulation of material-based knowledge. Additionally, the programme encourages public engagement with jewellery and wearable sculptures, both during creation and presentation, to better understand responses to students’ artistic practices.

Close collaboration with communities external to the academic institution are practiced. The learning environment is cross-disciplinary, where students from diverse artistic and design disciplines study in groups, along with experts from the humanities, social, and natural sciences.

Up to twenty students study in the Jewellery Class. The programme offers subject-specific study — SCHMUCK HALLE — and basic jewellery-making technical courses. SCHMUCK HALLE provides projects that deal with one topic over one year. Students are guided through studio-based as well as theoretical seminars, lectures, workshops, excursions, and individual / group tutorials. Students also experiment with presentations of their artistic results in various exhibition formats.
Basic jewellery-making technical courses are given weekly. However, students are expected to have basic jewellery-making skills at the time of enrollment.

Since fostering co-learning in a vibrant community is essential, the programme gathers for a monthly Roundtable. The discussion Roundtable is student-led and concludes with a collective cookout and dinner.

Exchange projects with other national and international universities, seminars and workshops with guest artists as well as exhibitions in Germany and abroad give students an opportunity to gain experience, make contacts, and prepare for the demands of the artistic profession.

Course of study

The Diploma degree in Fine Arts is awarded upon the completion of a five-year programme. The study is divided into three parts: Foundation, Main Study Programme and Diploma. Students attend the Foundation Programme in the first two years, where they learn basics of drawing / sculpting skills, multi-media technology and liberal arts. The Main Study Programme in the third and fourth years is devoted to subject-specific studio practice. Students can also take up to two semesters in a different subject as guest students. The fifth year, the Diploma, is dedicated to studio practice and theoretical contextualisation. Throughout the education, students have access to workshops in all subject areas.

Goldsmith and Silversmith Workshop

The workshop is set up as a traditional goldsmith and silversimith workshop. The workshop provides opportunities to work with non-precious metals, experimental materials, and various techniques. Each student is assigned their own jewellery workbench and drawing table.

Digital Workshops

Students can also work at the Design Campus in the Central Workshops, where a Digital Workshop is located. The workshop supports various digital 3D productions.

Enamelling Workshop

The processing and application of enamel has a long tradition at BURG. We have the increasingly rare opportunity to work with enamel on both precious metal and steel.
