How do people feel when they leave their home country to come to Europe? How can we break down right-wing narratives about refugees and migration? How can we make a collective move against racism and systematic discrimination in Germany?
The needs of all people living in this country are equally worthy. Participation, equal rights and self-determination for all are the basic requirements for a good life together. This togetherness is currently under serious threat from right-wing and conservative forces. How do we deal with this threat?
The exhibition Aufbrechen shows video works that take a stance against right-wing narratives and discrimination towards refugees in Germany. “Becoming Tradwife” disrupts algorithms on social media to counter populist strategies. “In Their Hands” criticizes the repression of refugees through the SocialCard (Bezahlkarte).
In the Studiengruppe Informationsdesign (SI) at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle, we investigate the social and political potential of design. We collaborate with partners outside the university and work on issues of social and political relevance. The Flüchtlingsrat Sachsen-Anhalt is a human rights organisation that was founded in 1994. It is committed to recognising the rights of refugees and improving their living conditions. The work of the Flüchtlingsrat includes analysing Germany's migration policy with its laws and political practices. This includes asylum policy and its laws, the right to stay, the accommodation of refugees and their access to state services. Social participation, systematic discrimination and racism are also issues that the Flüchtlingsrat deals with and positions itself against. Another central task is public relations work and sensitising society to the situation of refugees. Through our collaboration, we want to increase the visibility of the Flüchtlingsrat and develop new approaches to communicating political objectives.
