Master's course in the Design Faculty

Expand or deepen multimedia skills

In the Master's study course in Multimedia Design, students deepen their knowledge at the interfaces of creativity, design, technology and society. The study course focuses on advanced creative, methodological and technical skills that are necessary for the conception and implementation of sophisticated digital and interactive experiences.

During the course, students develop complex creative formats, experiment with the latest technologies and hone their ability to critically reflect on their own ideas and embed them in social and cultural contexts.

In-depth fundamental design and technical knowledge acquired in the Bachelor's programme or in professional practice are just as important as a high degree of initiative and a willingness to work in an interdisciplinary environment.
The Master's course specifically prepares students for challenging jobs in the creative industries, game design, media production, education and science as well as digital communication, with a focus on the use of innovative and immersive technologies.
All of this takes place in the inspiring environment of the BURG - one of the largest and most renowned university of art and design in Germany.

The study contents are orientated towards current issues in research, society and art as well as technical progress. They promote cross-border, experimental and realisation-oriented work.

The course focuses on the analysis, conception, multimedia preparation and presentation as well as interactive presentation of complex issues. Students can propose their own topics and are actively supported by the teaching staff in their work. Aim of the course

Students on the study course can expect a special learning format based on university principles and geared towards individual strengths and goals. The focus is on developing the unique talent and personal expression of each individual. The aim is to enable students to tackle creative challenges in a confident, goal-oriented and flexible manner, to realise their ideas at a high level and to present and communicate them convincingly in a professional environment.

Standard period of study

The duration of the Master's study course depends on the type and content as well as the duration and number of ECTS credits achieved in the previous degree programme and is usually between two and four semesters.

Two-semester Master's degree programme

The two-semester Master's study course can be completed following an eight-semester BA. Conceptually, it is intended for BURG Bachelor graduates. Exceptions are possible. The focus here is on the preparation of the Master's thesis in the first semester and its realisation in the second semester. The Master's thesis is usually an individual design topic. The programme concludes with the Master's thesis.

Four-semester Master's programme

The four-semester Master's study course is designed for graduates of a six- or seven-semester Bachelor's study course. In the first two semesters, it offers students a conceptual project course in which they can put together a study programme geared towards their individual specialisations through various elective options.

The third semester is dedicated to both the conceptual project studies and the preparation of the Master's thesis, while the fourth semester is completely dedicated to the realisation of the Master's thesis, which is usually an individual design topic. The programme concludes with the Master's thesis.
